Lunar Gravity Study Could Enable Future Space Farming

Researchers studied water's behavior in lunar gravity to help plan for future plant growth on the Moon. Findings from a February 2025 experiment suggest new irrigation system designs will be necessary.

New research on how water behaves in the Moon's gravity could pave the way for growing plants in future lunar bases. Scientists conducted an experiment in February 2025 to understand these dynamics, finding that water flows differently under the Moon's reduced gravity, about one-sixth of Earth's.

Space biologist John Z. Kiss led the study, "Assessing Water Dynamics at Lunar Gravity," with Karl H. Hasenstein and Christopher P. McKay. The findings are critical for lunar inhabitants who will rely on plants for food, oxygen, medicine, and water purification.

During a Blue Origin New Shepard 29 flight, the team observed liquids interacting with surface tension in simulated lunar gravity. They found that surface tension plays a more significant role in lunar gravity, causing water to flow less freely. "If you're going to water plants on the moon, you might have to design the whole system a little bit differently than you would on Earth," Kiss said. This is particularly challenging because lunar soil is a fine dust that absorbs water poorly.

The study also found that a 30% glycerol solution showed better water flow, suggesting additives could improve water absorption in lunar soil. The team plans longer-term experiments, possibly on the Moon, to verify their findings.
