India's Reliance on Chinese Imports Draws Scrutiny

India's imports from China have surged, reaching record levels despite ongoing efforts to boost local manufacturing. This growing reliance affects sectors from electronics to pharmaceuticals, impacting economic strategies.

10/05/2026 · Seminole edition

NEW DELHI — India's economic relationship with China shows increasing reliance on Chinese imports, according to recent trade figures. Data indicates India's imports from China reached $101 billion in 2022, marking a 21% increase from 2021. This surge represents the highest import total from China in a single year.

The trade deficit between the two nations also widened, reaching $87 billion in 2022. This figure increased by 29% compared to the previous year. India's exports to China decreased by 38% in the same period, totaling $14.7 billion.

Several key sectors in India now show significant dependence on Chinese goods. Pharmaceutical manufacturers, for example, import approximately 70% of their active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) from China. The electronics industry also relies heavily on Chinese components, including integrated circuits and display panels.

Analysts point to a number of factors contributing to this trend. Chinese manufacturers often offer competitive pricing and established supply chains. This makes their products attractive to Indian businesses seeking cost-effective inputs.

Government initiatives, such as the Production Linked Incentive (PLI) schemes, aim to reduce this reliance by encouraging domestic manufacturing. These programs offer financial incentives to companies that increase local production. However, the latest trade data suggests these efforts have not yet significantly altered the overall import landscape.

The increase in imports from China occurs against a backdrop of geopolitical tensions. Despite calls for reduced economic dependence, practical realities within various industries often favor Chinese suppliers. This dynamic shapes India's economic policies and trade strategies.
