SAMHSA also wanted to celebrate success stories to show that living in recovery from substance use is possible. Sally J. Finn, who was working at a needle and syringe exchange program at The Salvation Army in Melbourne, Australia, founded International Overdose Awareness Day in 2001. The day provides an opportunity for people to publicly mourn loved ones impacted by overdose; to stimulate discussion about overdose prevention and drug policy; and to inform people about substance use support services. Medication Assisted Treatment

Medication-Assisted Treatment | Chestnut Health Systems Medication Assisted Treatment and Recovery For more than four decades, Chestnut Health Systems™ has provided comprehensive addiction treatment for adults ages 18 and older. Addiction and mental illness are treatable yet chronic health problems. Many individuals living with alcohol and drug addiction also have a mental health issue. Our research-tested programs address both addiction and mental health to help adults achieve recovery and maintain sobriety. We believe that people should get addiction treatment in the least restrictive environment possible. Assessment An assessment is the first step in determining what treatment, if any, is needed. It takes into account all aspects of a person’s life to ensure that individual needs are addressed. To learn more, call us at 888.924.3786. For Madison and St. Clair Counties and for the Metro East area, call 618.877.4420. For the Hillsboro, Missouri area, call 800.446.0972. Based on assessment results, we create a unique treatment plan. Length of treatment depends on the person's progress toward goals. Outpatient Treatment This type of treatment lets individuals work on their recovery while living at home. It is appropriate for those who are struggling with addiction and are ready to learn to abstain from substance use, are motivated to change, and have a supportive living environment. Outpatient treatment involves up to eight hours of counseling each week. Patients are encouraged to continue their work in self-help groups such as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), and Celebrate Recovery. Intensive Outpatient Treatment This type of treatment requires nine or more hours of counseling each week. Treatment occurs in a small group setting. Length of treatment is determined by the patient’s needs. As with outpatient treatment, participation in self-help groups is encouraged. Residential Treatment This type of treatment is for adults who need a structured and supportive environment to maintain recovery and who require help to prevent further damage to their physical and emotional health. Licensed and certified counselors provide treatment in a comfortable setting. Residents participate in individual, group, and family counseling and learn life skills such as decision-making, stress management, assertiveness, coping, and relapse prevention. Care is supervised 24 hours a day. Residents have access to a psychiatrist, medical services, catered meals, and recreation. An important part of residential treatment is developing a continuing care program, which may include outpatient counseling and referrals to community support groups. Medication-Assisted Treatment This type of treatment helps people living with addiction to deal with the short-term and long-term effects of withdrawal. MAT helps individuals manage physical symptoms and reduce cravings while focusing on recovery and behavior changes. MAT combines medication, counseling, and community support to help people overcome dependence on opiates like heroin and prescription painkillers. Gender-Specific Treatment Treatment at Chestnut is gender-specific, allowing men and women to focus on issues specific to their strengths, needs, and barriers. While both genders may face common issues, such as relationships, family or origin, parenting, anger, spirituality, and dealing with emotions, providing gender-specific treatment creates a safe environment for exploring these topics. For Families Chestnut strongly encourages families to participate in their loved one’s treatment. Substance use affects the entire family. It may cause communication and trust to break down. For a person to recover, his or her family needs to understand addiction, learn the importance of family support, and make adjustments to their own behavior. Further, family members need support while their loved one works toward recovery. Chestnut’s family program helps family members to understand the addiction process, how to recognize relapse, and how to better communicate. For more information, please call us at 888.924.3786. For Madison and St. Clair Counties and for the Metro East area, call 618.877.4420. For the Hillsboro, Missouri area, call 800.446.0972. No Items found. Metro Link Project: Improving Safety and Connecting Riders to Community Resources

About the Bi-State Dev./St. Clair Transit District Project BSD and SCCTD Project The Bi-State Development (BSD)/St. Clair County, IL Transit District (SCCTD) project is an innovative initiative that aims to improve safety on the Metro Transit System and to connect riders to community resources. The project began in Spring 2021 when SCCTD partnered with Chestnut Health Systems to place Chestnut behavioral health providers on MetroLink vehicles and at transfer stations deemed to have the highest level of need. In October 2021, BSD joined the project. Five two-person teams from Chestnut work 40 hours per week in each district to address transit-related issues involving riders who live with substance use disorder and/or mental health concerns. Metro Transit security personnel work alongside the Chestnut teams and have received mental health awareness and de-escalation training. The project aims to: Reduce loitering on the system by “all-day” riders and those using Metro Transit Centers for non-transportation related needs; Address alcohol and drug use on the transit system; Reduce panhandling, argumentativeness, sleeping, and other behaviors that can impact operations; Provide early detection and intervention for riders who need services; Improve visibility of Metro Transit system safety, security, and rider satisfaction initiatives; Improve communication between riders and security staff; and Improve the overall rider experience. The innovative project recognizes that public safety does not depend solely on law enforcement. Underlying health determinants must be recognized and addressed. Often, the answer lies in connecting people to community resources including housing, food, primary health care, medication, transportation to service providers, substance use treatment, mental health counseling, employment opportunities, and more. The behavioral health teams deliver early intervention and treatment services. Riders/visitors in need receive in-the-moment crisis intervention and behavioral health support. Those willing to engage are connected to services provided by Chestnut or by another provider. When the behavioral health teams are not available, Metro Transit security personnel have access to behavioral health consultation and help by phone or video link. Additional funding is sought to sustain and potentially expand the program. Metro Transit operates the St. Louis region’s public transportation system that includes 400 clean-burning diesel buses and 18 battery electric buses that serve 65 MetroBus routes in eastern Missouri and southwestern Illinois. Metro also operates MetroLink light rail vehicles on 46 miles of track serving 38 stations in the two-state area, and operates Metro Call-A-Ride, a paratransit fleet of 125 vans. Metro Transit is a Bi-State Development enterprise. The St. Clair County Transit District (SCCTD) was created in 1981 under the Illinois Mass Transit District Act. SCCTD is a special purpose unit of local government empowered to collect a .75 percent sales tax for the purpose of providing public transportation. St. Clair County’s local investment of $339 million delivers access to a $1 billion transit system that includes MetroLink, MetroBus, Paratransit Alternative Transportation Service, and MetroBike Link. SCCTD provides and manages transportation services for fifteen Illinois townships. Bi-State Development (BSD) is a dynamic and multi-faceted resource for economic development in the St. Louis region. BSD has partnered since 1950 with private and public organizations to create thousands of jobs on both sides of the Mississippi River. BSD’s focus is to make a positive impact on the region and the nation. Chestnut Health Systems is a not-for-profit organization that has cared since 1973 for persons needing behavioral health services. Chestnut provides substance use disorder treatment, mental health counseling, primary health care, and housing and supportive services in Missouri and Illinois. It is a leader in substance use-related research. Learn more at www.chestnut.org.
