RANDOLPH COUNTY, AL – A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Randolph County, effective October 8 at 7:10 PM CDT by the National Weather Service in Birmingham, AL. This watch includes the Roanoke area and remains in effect until October 9 at 3:15 AM UTC.

Residents in Randolph County should take immediate action to prepare for hazardous wind, moderate flooding rain, and the potential for several tornadoes. Plan for hazardous wind of equivalent tropical storm force with peak winds forecast at 10-20 mph and gusts up to 40 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway now, and preparations should be completed before winds become hazardous. Potential impacts include damage to lightweight structures, broken tree limbs, and scattered power outages. Hazardous driving conditions are possible, especially on elevated roadways.

A Flood Watch is also in effect, with peak rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches expected, and locally higher amounts. Emergency plans should include the potential for moderate flooding, with evacuations and rescues possible. Heed all flood watches and warnings. Failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.

The situation is favorable for tornadoes, with a potential for several tornadoes, some possibly intense. Those living in manufactured homes should prepare to relocate to safe shelter. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. Significant impacts from tornadoes could include widespread damage, power loss, and communication failures.
