Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Randolph County: Prepare for Moderate Flooding
A Tropical Storm Watch has been issued for Randolph County, including Roanoke, until 12:15 PM UTC today by the NWS Birmingham, warning of moderate flooding rain and a potential for localized tornadoes.
RANDOLPH COUNTY, AL – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Randolph County, specifically affecting Roanoke. This watch was issued today, October 9, at 4:08 AM CDT and remains effective until 12:15 PM UTC today.
Residents should prepare for moderate flooding rain. A Flood Watch is in effect, with anticipated rainfall amounts of 1-3 inches, and locally higher amounts possible. Moderate rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries could quickly become swollen, and small streams, creeks, and ditches may overflow. Flooding can impact structures and cause hazardous driving conditions due to inundated underpasses and low-lying areas. Heed any flood watches and warnings; failure to take action may result in serious injury or loss of life.
While the latest forecast indicates wind speeds below tropical storm force (10-20 mph with gusts up to 35 mph), there is still a potential for winds between 39 to 57 mph. Listen for instructions from local officials and ensure emergency readiness should the wind forecast change. Realized wind impacts are currently being assessed.
A potential for a few tornadoes also exists. Keep informed should additional weather alerts be issued. If a tornado warning is announced, be ready to shelter quickly. Tornado impacts could include localized damage to buildings, downed trees, and disruptions to power and communications.
