Tropical Storm Watch Issued for Randolph County: Flood and Tornado Threat
A Tropical Storm Watch is in effect for Randolph County, with residents urged to prepare for moderate flooding and several potential tornadoes by October 9, 2026, 1:30 AM CDT.
RANDOLPH COUNTY – The National Weather Service (NWS) in Birmingham, Alabama, has issued a Tropical Storm Watch for Randolph County, effective immediately and expiring tomorrow, October 9, 2026, at 6:30 AM UTC (1:30 AM CDT).
Residents in Roanoke and surrounding areas should prepare for potential moderate flooding and several tornadoes. While sustained winds are expected to remain below tropical storm force (10-20 mph with gusts up to 45 mph), the primary threats are heavy rainfall and tornadoes.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with forecasts predicting 1-3 inches of rain, with locally higher amounts possible. This could lead to moderate rainfall flooding, prompting evacuations and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may swell, and small streams could overflow. Floodwaters may enter structures, and driving conditions could become hazardous with potential road and bridge closures. Residents in flood-prone areas should consider protective actions and heed all flood watches and warnings.
The NWS also indicates a favorable situation for tornadoes, with the potential for several to develop. Tornadoes could cause significant damage, including power loss and communication failures, with roofs torn off homes, mobile homes demolished, and large trees uprooted. If a tornado warning is issued, be ready to shelter quickly.
