Passerby, Woburn Cop Save Family from Raging Blaze

WOBURN, Mass. (Day.News) — A passerby driving along a Woburn highway spotted thick smoke billowing from a home Saturday morning and sprang into action, calling 911 and rushing to the scene. The alert led responding Woburn police to kick in the door of the multi-family residence, shouting warnings that woke a man, his mother and niece inside.[1] "The police officer got inside the house and called everybody … and then we just woke up and then boom," the man, identified only as Mentor, told WHDH 7News.[1]
Fire Chief George Poole credited the passerby's swift response: "A passerby saw it from the highway, made their way back over here, called it in and drove here in their own car. They were met by the Woburn police who kicked the door and roused the occupants."[1] Video footage showed intense flames and heavy smoke shooting from the roof, indicating the blaze had burned undetected for some time before discovery.[1] The family escaped safely with no injuries reported.
Crews battled the stubborn fire, but the home sustained heavy damage. The incident underscores the dangers of silent, fast-spreading house fires in Massachusetts communities, where working smoke alarms and early detection save lives. Woburn Fire Department is investigating the cause, with no further details released as of Sunday.[1]
