Lexington police responded to a 911 call around 1:40 p.m. Saturday from a father at a Mason Street residence, reporting that his 26-year-old son had injured himself with a knife and remained inside the home.[1] Officers from Lexington and the Northeastern Massachusetts Law Enforcement Council (NEMLEC), a consortium of 68 departments spanning Middlesex and Essex counties, arrived to assist.[1] They safely escorted two people from the house, leaving the son alone inside as they established a perimeter.[1]
The situation turned deadly when the man emerged wielding a large kitchen knife and advanced toward officers, undeterred by two uses of less-lethal force.[1] A Wilmington police officer assigned to NEMLEC fired, striking the unidentified man, who died at the scene.[1] The officer was hospitalized as a precaution but released without injury, according to Ryan's Saturday night news conference.[1] The home was known to police, though details remain limited in the early investigation stages.[1]
The shooting occurred less than a mile from Lexington's annual Patriots' Day parade route, briefly shutting down the street amid the holiday festivities.[3] Lexington, 20 miles northwest of Boston in Middlesex County, saw no other injuries in the incident.[1] Ryan urged respect for the family's request for privacy during their grief, with the State Police Detective Unit leading the probe alongside her office.[1][4]
