Clearwater Dermatologist Offers Crucial Spring Skincare Advice to Combat Skin Cancer

As Clearwater residents embrace the warmer weather and increased outdoor activities, a local dermatologist is urging the community to prioritize sun protection to prevent skin cancer. With spring officially here, Dr. Emily Carter, a board-certified dermatologist practicing on Gulf to Bay Boulevard, shared essential tips to safeguard skin from harmful UV rays.

“Spring in Clearwater means more time spent outdoors, whether it’s at our beautiful beaches, parks, or simply enjoying a walk,” Dr. Carter explained. “While the sunshine is inviting, it’s also a prime time for sun exposure that can significantly increase the risk of skin cancer, including melanoma, basal cell carcinoma, and squamous cell carcinoma.” These activities often take place at iconic locations like Pier 60, where crowds gather for daily sunset celebrations.

Dr. Carter emphasized the importance of daily sunscreen application, recommending a broad-spectrum sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. “It’s not just for beach days,” she advised. “Make it a part of your daily routine, even on cloudy days, and reapply every two hours, or more frequently if swimming or sweating.”

Beyond sunscreen, Dr. Carter highlighted other preventative measures. Wearing protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses, can offer an additional layer of defense. She also suggested seeking shade, especially during peak sun hours between 10:00 AM and 4:00 PM.

Regular self-skin exams are another critical component of early detection. “Clearwater residents should get to know their skin and perform monthly checks for any new or changing moles, spots, or lesions,” Dr. Carter stated. “If you notice anything suspicious, don’t hesitate to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist.”

The advice from Dr. Carter comes as the community gears up for various outdoor events and activities in places like the historic downtown or along the waterfront. Ensuring proper sun protection is a simple yet effective way for residents to enjoy everything Clearwater has to offer while maintaining their long-term health.
