Clearwater City Council to Address Key Development and Pension Matters

Clearwater residents can expect a busy agenda at upcoming City Council meetings, with several significant items moving forward for consideration. These include crucial land use changes, flexible development approvals, and important pension-related decisions affecting city employees.

Among the notable items is the National Safe Boating Week Proclamation, ID#26-0407, which is slated for presentation at an upcoming Council meeting. This proclamation highlights the city's commitment to public safety on its waterways along Clearwater Harbor.

Development in Clearwater continues to be a focal point. The City Council will review FLD2025-10026, a Flexible Development approval for the conversion of a property at 375 Turner Street in downtown Clearwater into a medical clinic. This project seeks flexibility for reduced off-street parking and landscape buffers, a common request for infill redevelopment projects. Additionally, FLD2026-01002 concerns a Flexible Development approval for an existing commercial dock at 125 Island Way, accessory to 27-unit attached dwellings within the High Density Residential Island Estates Neighborhood Conservation Overlay.

Significant land use and zoning amendments are also on the horizon. LUP2026-02001 proposes an amendment to the city’s Future Land Use Map, changing 1399 Pineapple Lane from Residential Low (Pinellas County) to Recreation/Open Space (City of Clearwater). Correspondingly, REZ2026-02001 seeks to amend the city’s Zoning Atlas for the same property, shifting it from Residential Agriculture to Open Space/Recreation.

The City Council will also address several pension-related items, including the approval of new hires as plan members (ID#26-0396) and reviewing requests for vested (ID#26-0397) and regular (ID#26-0398) pensions for employees. These decisions are vital for the financial well-being of city staff and the long-term stability of the pension system, overseen by bodies like the Pension Trustees, chaired by Mayor Bruce Rector, and the Pension Advisory Committee, chaired by Nathan Hightower.

In a moment of community recognition, Fire Fighter Charles Stokes will be presented with the Medal of Courage Award (ID#26-0395), alongside an award for the Pinellas County Deputy who assisted in the incident. Such recognitions underscore the bravery and dedication of Clearwater's first responders.

Residents interested in these matters can attend upcoming City Council meetings, which typically occur approximately every 18 days at 6:00 PM. The minutes from the March 17, 2026 Community Development Board (CDB) meeting (ID#26-0399) are also ready for approval, providing a record of past development discussions.

The Neighborhood and Affordable Housing Advisory Board is scheduled to meet on April 14, 2026, at 9:00 AM at the Main Library - Council Chambers, though this meeting would have already occurred as of today, April 16, 2026. Residents can typically find meeting schedules and agendas on the city's official website.
