Tropical Storm Warning Issued for Wewahitchka: Prepare Immediately

Wewahitchka is under a Tropical Storm Warning with immediate threats of hazardous winds, major flooding, and numerous tornadoes; prepare property and seek shelter now.

Staff Writer
10/09/2026 · Gulf County edition

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Inland Gulf, specifically affecting Wewahitchka, as of October 9 at 11:05 AM EDT by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL. This warning is in effect until 7:15 PM UTC today.

Residents in Wewahitchka should immediately prepare for hazardous winds, potential major flooding, and numerous tornadoes. Winds are forecast to reach 25-35 mph with gusts up to 60 mph. Efforts to protect property should be underway now, and preparations must be completed before winds become hazardous. Damage to unanchored mobile homes, porches, awnings, and carports is possible, along with downed trees and power outages. Limited road impassability from debris is also expected.

A Flood Watch is in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, and locally higher amounts possible. This carries the potential for major flooding. Evacuations and rescues are likely, and protective actions are strongly advised for those in flood-vulnerable areas. Failure to act can result in serious injury or loss of life.

The situation is very favorable for tornadoes, with the potential for many, some of which may be intense with larger damage paths. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter immediately. Listen for tornado watches and warnings and be ready to shelter quickly if a warning is issued. The occurrence of numerous tornadoes can significantly hinder emergency plans.

There is little to no storm surge flooding expected. For more information, visit NWS Tallahassee, Florida Division of Emergency Management, or Gulf County Emergency Management.
