Guidance

Port St. Joe Elementary School Guidance Department Home / PSJES / Guidance Focus Parent Portal Enroll a New Student Guidance Staff Jacqueline Patterson Guidance (850) 227-1221 Email Me Stephanie Newsome Guidance Secretary (850) 227-1221 Email Me Mission It is the mission of Gulf County school counselors to deliver a multi-layered, comprehensive, and accountable guidance program in which equity, access, and academic success for ALL students is the focus. In doing so, school guidance and counseling are provided to students, parents, and teachers so that students can reach their greatest physical, emotional, psychological, and behavioral potential. Goal The elementary guidance program is developmental and takes a proactive, instructional approach to provide counseling and guidance activities/programs that address the academic, social, and emotional needs of our students. The ultimate goal is to reduce barriers that impede student success. Children in elementary school begin to acquire academic and personal/social development skills. They are gaining new awareness of themselves as they interact with others. Students are in the process of forming basic values, attitudes, and interests that impact their education and, ultimately, their future. Furthermore, they begin to understand the world of work and have some general knowledge of different occupations and career choices. School counselors and teachers help children to develop positive attitudes toward school, take pride in their own efforts, and acquire good work habits at school. The primary goal of an effective career development program in the elementary school is to introduce children to the tasks that are important for a productive and rewarding way of life. Students need to become aware of themselves, how they are unique and constantly changing, and how they can use school experiences to explore and prepare for their future. There is evidence that the information students first learn carries the most weight in their ultimate decisions. Elementary schools must focus attention on areas such as: positive self-concept, responsible behavior, broad career awareness, interpersonal and communication skills, respect and diversity, and decision-making skills. Message from Your Principal

Dear Students and Families, Welcome to Port St. Joe Elementary School.  It is indeed a tremendous honor and privilege to serve as your principal for the 2024-25 school year. We are pleased that you have visited our website, and if you need additional information, do not hesitate to contact us. Thank you for sharing your children; they are truly a gift to us. Your child’s elementary school years are a special time in his or her life. During this time, children undergo important developmental changes. It is also a time when children become more autonomous, and they transition from “learning to read” to “reading to learn.” I believe that parents are the first teachers of their children, and they play a central role in their children’s education. I invite you to participate in open, honest, and continuous communication with your child’s teachers to ensure a successful home-school partnership. I encourage you to tell our teachers about your child’s needs throughout the year so that he or she has “the best” educational experience. Our staff takes great pride in providing a safe, secure learning environment and is committed to providing our students with opportunities that allow them to flourish and grow academically.  Our school believes that achieving success academically and in life is not built solely around one’s IQ; rather, success is a combination of hard work, being accountable, and caring about others. As principal, it is important for me that my staff, parents, and students become partners in this journey that we have embarked upon. All of us must come to school every day happy and ready to give it our best. A positive attitude will enable us to become problem solvers in a fun, nurturing environment. Thank you in advance for supporting your child’s success at school in the classroom and through our parent organizations. Let us all commit to making a greater effort towards communicating with each other. If I can ever be of assistance, please contact me. Respectfully, Jessica Brock Principal
