Local Burger Joint Fights for Survival Amidst Soaring Costs

A popular Tampa burger restaurant, TNT Burger, closed its South Tampa location after inflation and hurricane damage made continued operation impossible. The company now focuses on saving its original establishment as it navigates a challenging economic landscape for eateries.

A Beloved Burger Joint's Struggle

TNT Burger, which launched in 2020, quickly gained a following with unique menu items like the “Cheesy Beast” and the “COVID-19 Vaccine Burger,” featuring a sauce-filled syringe customers inject into their patty. Co-owner Carolina Martinez noted the significant impact of rising costs. “We really started feeling the inflation last year, especially in the food prices,” Martinez said, highlighting increased expenses for beef, french fries, and tomatoes. Rent bills and commercial insurance payments also ballooned.

The Financial Squeeze on Restaurants

The struggles faced by TNT Burger reflect a broader trend across the restaurant industry. Data from the National Restaurant Association indicates total restaurant expenses climbed 36% since 2019. Furthermore, 42% of restaurant operators reported losing money last year. This financial squeeze forces owners like Martinez to confront a difficult choice: raise prices for customers or accept shrinking profit margins.

Innovation and Community in Challenging Times

Despite these difficulties, Martinez and her husband continue to operate their original location. They leveraged social media to build their customer base and maintain a connection with diners. Martinez expressed the dilemma of wanting to keep meals affordable for families while their own profit margins diminish. “I know there are families are struggling with inflation as well, but our profit margin is getting smaller and smaller, so that’s the biggest challenge facing us right now,” she stated.

Looking Ahead: Persistence Despite Adversity

Even with current hardships, the owners still plan to open new TNT Burger locations across Florida. Martinez attributes their persistence to a love for what they do. She also extended gratitude to their loyal customers. “To our customers, thank you for continuing to support our small business,” Martinez said. “We really appreciate it. I know you have a lot of burger restaurants out there, but you keep showing us love.”
