Rip Current Statement Issued for Coastal Pender, New Hanover Counties
A Rip Current Statement, High Surf Advisory, and Coastal Flood Advisory have been issued for Coastal Pender and New Hanover Counties by the National Weather Service, warning of dangerous rip currents, large waves, and minor coastal flooding from early Sunday morning through Sunday evening.
A Rip Current Statement, alongside a High Surf Advisory and Coastal Flood Advisory, has been issued for Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover Counties. The National Weather Service in Wilmington, NC, issued these advisories on October 11 at 12:02 AM EDT, with varying effective periods throughout the day.
Residents and visitors should be aware of dangerous rip currents expected from 6 AM EDT Sunday through Sunday evening. Inexperienced swimmers are advised to remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions, with large breaking waves of 2 to 5 feet in the surf zone. If caught in a rip current, relax and float; do not swim against the current. Attempt to swim parallel to the shoreline, and if unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Swim near a lifeguard if possible.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect from 7 AM to 10 AM EDT Sunday, with up to one half foot of inundation expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. This may lead to minor coastal flooding on low-lying roads and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property. Check with local officials for any road closures or impacts.
These advisories are in effect until October 11 at 8:00 PM EDT.
