Residents and visitors in Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover counties should be aware of a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC, effective immediately until 8:00 PM EDT today, October 11.

Dangerous rip currents are expected from 6 AM EDT this morning through this evening. Additionally, a High Surf Advisory is in effect until 8 AM EDT this morning, with large breaking waves of 2 to 5 feet. A Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect from 7 AM to 10 AM EDT this morning, with up to one half foot of inundation above ground level expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways.

Inexperienced swimmers are urged to remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
