Dangerous Rip Currents and High Surf Expected for Coastal Pender and New Hanover
Dangerous rip currents and high surf are expected for Coastal Pender and New Hanover counties, with a Rip Current Statement active until 8 PM EDT today and a High Surf Advisory until Sunday morning.
Coastal Pender and New Hanover counties are under a Rip Current Statement and High Surf Advisory until this evening and Sunday morning, respectively. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington, NC, issued the alert at 11:58 AM EDT today, October 10.
A High Rip Current Risk is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT this evening, October 10. Dangerous rip currents are expected. A High Surf Advisory is also in effect until 8:00 AM EDT on Sunday, October 11, with large breaking waves of 4 to 6 feet anticipated in the surf zone.
These conditions will result in dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can quickly pull even strong swimmers away from the shore into deeper water.
The NWS advises that inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to the dangerous surf. If you do enter the water, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If you cannot escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
