Rip Current Statement Issued for Coastal Pender, New Hanover
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover counties until October 11 at 8:00 PM EDT, with dangerous rip currents and large waves expected; a Coastal Flood Advisory is also in effect until 11 PM EDT tonight.
Coastal Pender and Coastal New Hanover counties are currently under a Rip Current Statement, effective from October 10 at 8:05 PM EDT until October 11 at 8:00 PM EDT. The National Weather Service in Wilmington, NC, has issued this alert, alongside a Coastal Flood Advisory and a High Surf Advisory.
Residents and visitors are advised to take immediate precautions. A High Rip Current Risk is in effect from 6 AM EDT Sunday through Sunday evening, with dangerous rip currents expected. Large breaking waves of 3 to 6 feet are anticipated in the surf zone. Inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the water due to hazardous surf conditions.
If caught in a rip current, the National Weather Service advises relaxing and floating. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 11 PM EDT this evening, with up to one foot of inundation above ground level possible in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. Low-lying roads and areas along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks may experience minor coastal flooding. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
The High Surf Advisory is in effect until 8 AM EDT Sunday. These conditions are based on average tide conditions; additional locations may experience flooding with heavy rainfall or high winds. Stay informed and follow local official guidance for road closures or impacts.
