A low-pressure system in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico has a 90% chance of developing into a tropical depression or tropical storm within 48 hours, according to the National Hurricane Center. The system, which formed near Mexico's Gulf Coast, is expected to strengthen and move east before turning north toward the U.S. Gulf Coast.
Residents along Florida's Panhandle and the northern Gulf Coast should monitor the storm's progress. Forecasters are determining the system's potential strength and exact path. However, Palm Beach County and the rest of South Florida, from Delray Beach to Jupiter, are not in the direct forecast track.
If the disturbance becomes a tropical storm, it will be named Isaias (pronounced ees-ah-EE-ahs). Northern Gulf Coast residents should follow updates from the National Hurricane Center.
