Extreme Storm Surge Warning for Okaloosa Coastal Areas
An Extreme Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Okaloosa Coastal areas, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, with life-threatening storm surge and hurricane-force winds expected.
An Extreme Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Okaloosa Coastal areas, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL on October 9 at 10:13 PM CDT. This warning remains effective until October 10 at 6:15 AM UTC.
Residents should be aware of a life-threatening storm surge with potential inundation of 3-5 feet above ground in surge-prone areas, continuing through Saturday morning. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in safe shelters away from surge flooding. Remain sheltered in a safe location and do not venture outside.
Hurricane-force winds of 55-75 mph with gusts up to 115 mph are expected through the next few hours. The NWS advises planning for extreme wind equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane or higher. Last-minute efforts should focus solely on protecting life. Shelter from life-threatening wind now and be ready to move to the safest place inside your shelter if necessary.
A Flood Watch is also in effect, with an additional 1 inch of rainfall expected. Major rainfall flooding may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings. The tornado threat has decreased, and tornadoes are not expected.
