Tropical Storm Warning Issued: Okaloosa Coastal Residents Must Shelter Immediately
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for Okaloosa Coastal, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, with immediate shelter urged due to expected tropical storm-force winds, extreme wind potential, and life-threatening storm surge.
A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for the Okaloosa Coastal area, including Destin, Eglin AFB, and Fort Walton Beach, issued by NWS Mobile AL on October 10 at 1:02 AM CDT. Residents must shelter immediately as tropical storm-force winds of 35-45 mph, with gusts up to 60 mph, are expected through the next few hours.
There is a potential for extreme wind greater than 110 mph, equivalent to a Category 3 hurricane or higher. Last-minute efforts should focus solely on protecting life. Remain sheltered from life-threatening wind and be ready to move to the safest place inside your shelter.
Life-threatening storm surge of 3-5 feet above ground is possible, particularly around high tide. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from surge areas. Remain sheltered in a safe location; do not venture outside.
Extensive major rainfall flooding is anticipated, which may prompt evacuations and rescues. Heed any flood watches and warnings. Tornadoes are not expected at this time. For evacuation and shelter information, contact Okaloosa County EMA at 850-651-7150 or visit myokaloosa.com/emergency-management.
