Dangerous Rip Currents and High Surf Along Gulf Coast Beaches
A Rip Current Statement and High Surf Warning are in effect for coastal Mobile, Baldwin, Escambia, Santa Rosa, and Okaloosa counties, urging everyone to stay out of the water due to dangerous conditions until Sunday afternoon.
Coastal residents and visitors are advised to stay out of the water due to life-threatening surf conditions and dangerous rip currents. A Rip Current Statement and High Surf Warning have been issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL, effective immediately.
The High Surf Warning, with dangerously large breaking waves of 10 to 15 feet, is in effect until 7 AM CDT this morning, October 10. The High Rip Current Risk will persist through Sunday afternoon, October 11, at 6:00 PM CDT.
Affected areas include Mobile Coastal and Baldwin Coastal Counties in Alabama, and Escambia Coastal, Santa Rosa Coastal, and Okaloosa Coastal Counties in Florida.
The NWS warns that breaking waves can sweep individuals off jetties and docks, leading to dangerous situations. Life-threatening swimming conditions and significant beach erosion are expected. Rip currents can carry even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
Everyone should remain out of the water. Avoid jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not swim against the current. Attempt to swim parallel to the shoreline if possible. If unable to escape, face the shore and signal for help.
