Extreme Storm Surge Warning Issued for Mobile Central; Evacuate Immediately
An Extreme Storm Surge Warning is in effect for Mobile Central, including Mobile, Prichard, and Theodore, with immediate evacuation advised due to life-threatening storm surge and potential hurricane-force winds.
A Storm Surge Warning of Extreme severity has been issued for Mobile Central, including Mobile, Prichard, and Theodore, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Mobile AL, effective immediately as of October 8 at 9:57 PM CDT. Residents in these areas are advised to leave immediately if evacuation orders are given to avoid being cut off from emergency services.
Life-threatening storm surge inundation of 4-6 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning, impacting areas from the Dog River up through the Mobile River and its tributaries, including downtown Mobile. Significant flooding is expected, potentially washing out sections of near-shore escape routes and secondary roads, especially the US 90 Causeway.
Equivalent Tropical Storm force winds are forecast, with peak winds of 35-45 mph and gusts up to 55 mph, from early Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning. However, there is a potential for life-threatening wind of equivalent CAT 1 or 2 hurricane force (74-110 mph). Prepare for considerable wind damage, extensive roof damage, and widespread power and communication outages. Move to safe shelter before winds become hazardous.
A Flood Watch is in effect, with 1-3 inches of rainfall expected, potentially leading to major flooding, evacuations, and rescues. Rivers and tributaries may overflow, and many structures could become uninhabitable. Heed all flood watches and warnings.
