A Special Weather Statement has been issued for the Tavaputs Plateau and Arches/Grand Flat areas, urging residents to seek shelter due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service in Grand Junction, CO, issued the alert today, October 12, at 8:19 PM MDT, effective until 8:45 PM MDT.

At 8:18 PM MDT, radar indicated a strong thunderstorm 15 miles east of Green River, moving northeast at 45 mph. This storm is expected to bring wind gusts up to 40 mph and half-inch hail. These conditions could lead to downed tree limbs, displaced unsecured objects, and minor damage to vegetation.

The affected areas include mainly rural parts of west central Grand County, specifically Interstate 70 in Utah between mile markers 172 and 191, and U.S. Highway 191 in Utah between mile markers 152 and 157.

Torrential rainfall is also occurring, which may cause localized flooding. Do not drive through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is present; seek safe shelter inside a building or vehicle as lightning can strike up to 10 miles away.
