A strong thunderstorm with 40 mph winds and penny-sized hail is impacting the Eastern Uinta Basin and Tavaputs Plateau until 6:45 PM MDT, prompting an NWS warning to seek shelter indoors and avoid flooded roads.
Residents in the Eastern Uinta Basin and Tavaputs Plateau are advised to seek shelter indoors due to a strong thunderstorm. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Grand Junction, CO, issued a Special Weather Statement today, September 18, at 6:18 PM MDT, effective until 6:45 PM MDT.
Doppler radar has detected a strong thunderstorm 39 miles southwest of Dinosaur, or 43 miles southeast of Fort Duchesne, moving northeast at 20 mph. This storm presents hazards including wind gusts up to 40 mph and penny-sized hail, according to radar indications.
The NWS warns that gusty winds could knock down tree limbs and displace unsecured objects. Minor hail damage to vegetation and outdoor objects is possible. The storm is expected to remain over mainly rural areas of southeastern Uintah County.
Torrential rainfall is also occurring with this storm, which may lead to localized flooding. Drivers are cautioned not to drive their vehicles through flooded roadways. If you are outdoors, consider seeking shelter inside a building immediately.
