Red Flag Warning Issued: Extreme Fire Conditions Expected

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Northern and Southern Calcasieu and Orange areas until 7:00 PM CDT today, October 9, 2026, due to extreme fire conditions; avoid all outdoor burning.

A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Northern Calcasieu, Southern Calcasieu, Northern Orange, and Southern Orange areas until 7:00 PM CDT today, October 9, 2026. Residents are urged to avoid all outdoor burning during this period as any fire that develops will catch and spread quickly.

The National Weather Service in Lake Charles issued the severe warning due to a combination of breezy and dry conditions from the outer periphery of Hurricane Isaias and very dry fuels. Conditions include northeast winds of 5 to 15 mph, relative humidity as low as 29 percent, and temperatures reaching up to 92 degrees.

A Red Flag Warning indicates that critical fire weather conditions are either occurring now or will shortly. The combination of strong winds, low relative humidity, and warm temperatures can contribute to extreme fire behavior. It is critical that residents adhere to the recommendation against outdoor burning to prevent dangerous fire incidents.
