Strong Thunderstorms Near Moss Bluff: Seek Shelter, Expect Gusts
A Special Weather Statement is in effect for Northern and Southern Calcasieu Parish until 7:45 PM CDT, warning of strong thunderstorms with 40 mph wind gusts, heavy rain, and lightning. Seek indoor shelter immediately.
Residents in Northern and Southern Calcasieu Parish, especially those outdoors, should seek immediate shelter indoors. A Special Weather Statement has been issued by the National Weather Service in Lake Charles, LA, effective until 7:45 PM CDT tonight, September 21.
At 7:04 PM CDT, Doppler radar detected a cluster of strong thunderstorms over Moss Bluff, moving west at 10 mph. These storms are capable of producing wind gusts up to 40 mph. The primary impact will be gusty winds that could potentially knock down tree limbs and displace unsecured objects.
Areas expected to be impacted include Lake Charles, Sulphur, Westlake, Moss Bluff, Carlyss, Buhler, and Gillis. Interstate 10 in Louisiana between mile markers 19 and 38, and Interstate 210 between mile markers 1 and 7, and between mile markers 10 and 12 are also within the affected zone.
In addition to strong winds, these storms are bringing torrential rainfall, which may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also occurring. Remember that lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm; seeking shelter inside a building or vehicle is crucial for safety.
