Strong Thunderstorm Warning: Seek Shelter in West Cameron, East Cameron, S. Calcasieu
A strong thunderstorm with 50 mph winds and torrential rain is impacting West Cameron, East Cameron, and Southern Calcasieu until 7:45 PM CDT; seek shelter indoors and avoid flooded roads.
Residents in West Cameron, East Cameron, and Southern Calcasieu parishes are advised to seek shelter indoors immediately due to a strong thunderstorm moving through the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Lake Charles issued a Special Weather Statement at 7:01 PM CDT, effective until 7:45 PM CDT.
At 7:01 PM CDT, NWS radar indicated a strong thunderstorm near Lake Charles Regional Airport, moving west at 15 mph. This storm is capable of producing wind gusts up to 50 mph, which could knock down tree limbs and displace unsecured objects. Torrential rainfall is also expected, potentially leading to localized flooding. Drivers should not attempt to cross flooded roadways.
Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is occurring with this storm. Remember that lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Secure shelter inside a building or vehicle is recommended.
Areas impacted include Grand Lake, Lake Charles Regional Airport, Hackberry, Carlyss, Hacketts Corner, Heberts Marina, Sweet Lake, and Holmwood. This statement is issued by NWS Lake Charles LA.
