Residents in Northern and Southern Calcasieu Parish are advised to seek shelter indoors as strong thunderstorms with wind gusts up to 50 mph are impacting the area. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Lake Charles issued a Special Weather Statement at 7:40 PM CDT, effective until 8:30 PM CDT.
At 7:39 PM CDT, Doppler radar detected a cluster of strong thunderstorms near Sulphur, moving west at 20 mph. These storms pose a hazard of wind gusts up to 50 mph, which could knock down tree limbs and blow around unsecured objects.
Locations impacted include Sulphur, Vinton, Starks, Carlyss, Lunita, Buhler, Toomey, and Edgerly. Interstate 10 in Louisiana between mile markers 2 and 25 is also included in the affected area.
In addition to strong winds, torrential rainfall is occurring and may lead to localized flooding. Do not drive your vehicle through flooded roadways. Frequent cloud-to-ground lightning is also present; lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from a thunderstorm. Seek a safe shelter inside a building or vehicle immediately if outdoors.
