Beach Hazards: Rip Currents, High Surf for Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands
A Beach Hazards Statement is in effect for Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island until 8:00 PM EDT today, October 11, 2026, due to dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves up to 7 feet.
Residents and visitors on Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island are advised to exercise extreme caution at the beaches today due to a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC.
This statement is in effect until 8:00 PM EDT this evening, October 11, 2026. The NWS reports dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves, reaching 6 to 7 feet in the surf zone, are expected. These conditions pose significant risks for swimmers and surfers.
Impacts include dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion. Rip currents can carry individuals away from shore into deeper water. Dangerous shore break can cause neck and back injuries.
Inexperienced swimmers must remain out of the water. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to the shoreline. If tired, float or tread water. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. When in breaking waves, protect your head and neck by keeping your hands in front of you at all times.
