Residents and visitors on Ocracoke Island and Hatteras Island should be aware of a Beach Hazards Statement issued by the National Weather Service Newport/Morehead City NC. This statement is effective immediately, October 10 at 8:13 PM EDT, and remains in effect until October 11 at 8:00 PM EDT.

Large breaking waves of 5 to 8 feet in the surf zone are expected, creating dangerous swimming and surfing conditions. Dangerous rip currents are also anticipated. The most likely time for strong rip currents is around 3:00 PM EDT Sunday.

Impacts include life-threatening rip currents, dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, and localized beach erosion. Inexperienced swimmers are advised to remain out of the water. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, float or tread water, and face the shore while calling or waving for help.

Shore break, where waves break directly on the beach, can cause serious injuries. Protect your head and neck by keeping your hands in front of you when in breaking waves.
