Dangerous Rip Currents, High Surf on Hatteras & Ocracoke Islands

A Beach Hazards Statement for dangerous rip currents is in effect for Hatteras and Ocracoke Island beaches until 8 PM EDT tonight, followed by a High Surf Advisory from 8 PM EDT tonight until 8 PM EDT Sunday.

Hatteras and Ocracoke Island beaches are experiencing a Beach Hazards Statement for dangerous rip currents, effective until 8 PM EDT tonight, October 10. The National Weather Service (NWS) Newport/Morehead City NC issued this statement at 11:00 AM EDT.

A High Surf Advisory will follow, bringing large breaking waves of 6 to 8 feet in the surf zone from 8 PM EDT tonight until 8 PM EDT Sunday, October 12. These conditions create dangerous swimming and surfing conditions, along with localized beach erosion.

The NWS warns that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore. The most likely time for strong rip currents today is around 2:00 PM EDT, coinciding with low tide.

Inexperienced swimmers are urged to stay out of the water due to the hazardous surf. If caught in a rip current, remain calm. Swim parallel to the shoreline. If fatigued, float or tread water until you are out of the current. If escape is not possible, face the shore and signal for help.
