Beach Hazards: High Surf and Dangerous Rip Currents for Hatteras & Ocracoke
Hatteras and Ocracoke Islands are under a Beach Hazards Statement and High Surf Advisory until 8 PM EDT today, October 11, due to dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves, urging inexperienced swimmers to stay out of the water.
Hatteras Island and Ocracoke Island beaches are currently under a Beach Hazards Statement and High Surf Advisory, effective until 8:00 PM EDT today, October 11.
The National Weather Service in Newport/Morehead City NC has issued this alert due to expected large breaking waves, ranging from 5 to 8 feet in the surf zone, and dangerous rip currents. These conditions will create hazardous swimming and surfing conditions, along with the potential for localized beach erosion. Dangerous shore break is also anticipated, which can cause serious injuries.
Inexperienced swimmers are advised to stay out of the water. If caught in a rip current, remain calm and swim parallel to the shoreline. If fatigued, float or tread water and signal for help. When in breaking waves, protect your head and neck by keeping hands in front of you. The most likely time for strong rip currents is around low tide, which is expected around 3:00 PM EDT today.
