Rip Current Statement Issued for Coastal Horry and Georgetown Counties
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Coastal Horry and Georgetown Counties until 8 PM EDT tonight, October 10, warning of dangerous rip currents. Swim near lifeguards and know how to react if caught in a current.
Coastal Horry and Georgetown County residents and visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution when entering the ocean today due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Wilmington NC. This statement is effective immediately, October 10 at 9:56 AM EDT, and remains in effect until 8:00 PM EDT tonight, October 10.
Dangerous rip currents are expected along the coasts of both Coastal Horry and Coastal Georgetown Counties. Rip currents can be powerful and can pull even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
To ensure safety, the NWS strongly recommends swimming near a lifeguard. If you find yourself caught in a rip current, remember to relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If you are able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If you cannot escape the current, face the shore and call or wave for help.
