Tropical Cyclone Nolo: All Watches/Warnings Canceled, Flood and Surf Risks Remain
All tropical watches and warnings for the Hawaiian islands have been canceled, but strong winds, heavy rain, and dangerous surf are still expected from Hurricane Nolo.
HONOLULU, HI – September 26, 2026, 5:15 PM HST – All tropical watches and warnings for the Hawaiian islands have been canceled, according to a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Honolulu.
While direct tropical cyclone watches and warnings are no longer in effect, residents across Lanai, Kahoolawe, Maui, Molokai, and the Big Island should remain vigilant. Hurricane Nolo, currently 330 miles south-southeast of Honolulu with 90 mph winds moving west at 8 mph, is expected to strengthen. The NWS advises that strong gusty winds, heavy rainfall, and dangerously large surf are still anticipated due to the storm's proximity and interaction with high pressure.
A Flood Watch remains in effect for the Big Island through tonight, with potential for an additional 1 to 2 inches of rain, isolated areas receiving up to 4 inches, especially in windward and southeast regions. Maui could also see 1 to 2 inches of rain. Localized heavy rain may cause significant flooding and mudslides. A High Surf Warning is in effect for south-facing shores of the Big Island, and a High Surf Advisory for east-facing shores of Big Island, Maui, Molokai, Oahu, and Kauai. These conditions bring large, rough surf and severe rip currents.
Residents are advised to remain safely sheltered until conditions improve. If venturing outside, stay clear of downed power lines, hazardous debris, and flooded areas. Do not attempt to return to evacuated areas until authorities give the all clear. For additional preparedness information, visit ready.gov or redcross.org.
