Residents in Pinellas and Coastal Hillsborough Counties are advised to exercise caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin FL. This statement is effective immediately, October 9 at 11:01 PM EDT, and remains in effect until October 10 at 8:00 PM EDT.

Dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves are expected. The NWS warns that rip currents can sweep even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to these hazardous surf conditions. If you choose to swim, do so near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float; do not attempt to swim against the current. Instead, swim in a direction following the shoreline if possible. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory and High Surf Risk are in effect through 8 AM EDT Saturday. Minor coastal flooding is expected, potentially affecting lots, parks, and roads with isolated road closures. If travel is necessary, allow extra time and do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take necessary actions to protect their assets.
