Rip Current Statement Issued for Pinellas, Coastal Hillsborough
A Rip Current Statement has been issued for Pinellas and Coastal Hillsborough Counties, with dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves expected from Friday morning through Saturday evening, along with minor coastal flooding and a High Surf Advisory.
Residents and visitors in Pinellas and Coastal Hillsborough Counties should be aware of a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tampa Bay Ruskin FL. The NWS anticipates dangerous rip currents and large breaking waves from Friday morning through Saturday evening. A Coastal Flood Advisory and High Surf Risk are also in effect from Friday, October 9, at 11 AM EDT to Saturday, October 10, at 8 AM EDT.
Minor coastal flooding is expected, potentially leading to flooding of lots, parks, and roads, with isolated road closures. Rip currents pose a significant danger, capable of sweeping even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper water.
If travel is necessary, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take actions to protect flood-prone property. For those entering the water, swim near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. The High Surf Advisory indicates that high surf will affect beaches in the advisory area, causing localized beach erosion and dangerous swimming conditions.
