City of Durango Wins Sterling Best Practices Award for Leadership

Durango, CO: The City of Durango was recognized on Friday,  May 29, by the Florida Sterling Council with a Sterling Best Practices Award for “Visionary Leadership Drives Customer Excellence.”The Florida Sterling Council was formed in 1992 with its core business focused on the management of the Sterling/Baldridge National Criteria for Performance Excellence. By conducting organizational assessments, the council helps local governments become high-performing organizations. Ultimately, this improves the city’s customer relations and in the process, saves taxpayer dollars. As part of this commitment to continuous improvement, the city has implemented internally its Trail to Excellence program, which commits to national best practices, ongoing evaluation of processes, outstanding service quality, and meaningful community engagement.“This recognition belongs to each and every one of our employees,” said City Manager Jose Madrigal. “While the award highlights leadership, what the examiners truly recognized was the culture, systems, and commitment that exist throughout our organization. They saw employees who care about one another, work collaboratively across departments, embrace continuous improvement, and remain focused on delivering exceptional service to our community.”A team of trained examiners from across the country and multiple industries reviewed the city’s application, conducted interviews, evaluated its practices, and validated what it does through a comprehensive site visit. During their visit, they met with employees from all levels of the organization and observed firsthand how our values, strategic priorities, and commitment to excellence are put into action every day.Following the examiners’ site visit this spring, they commended the progress our organization has made in creating a culture of excellence and identified several best practices worthy of recognition.City councilors recognized the award within the context of the city’s leadership and customer service from staff.‘This is an amazing achievement to be honored with a Sterling Council Award,” said councilor Gilda Yazzie. “This is an excellent reflection of our leadership and teamwork throughout the City of Durango. Congratulations!”Councilor Kip Koso touted how the city employees turn values into actions that improve our community. “I recently drove past two staff members of our parks crew clearing weeds out from the medians on Florida, Camino del Rio and Wilson Gulch over the course of several days with traffic going by all day long,” he said. “This is just one small example of hard work and outstanding service that is often overlooked but that makes a real impact in how residents view and appreciate our city.”WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!Do you have a comment, question, or suggestion? Durango City Council Advances Fast-Track Housing Ordinance to Qualify for State Funding

"Durango, CO: Council voted to accept the introduction of an ordinance that would amend the city’s Land Use Development Code to comply with Proposition 123 regarding fast-track review for affordable housing projects.Proposition 123 is the primary projected funding source for various City of Durango housing projects and initiatives. State voters approved the measure in 2022, which created the State Affordable Housing Fund.  To be eligible to receive these funds, the city must adopt a fast-track approval process in which qualifying projects receive approval or denial within 90 days. The requirement to have a fast-track approval process begins Jan. 1, 2027, but state financial incentives will be available for jurisdictions that adopt such a process no later than June 30. Councilors on Tuesday accepted the introduction of the ordinance, which will be reviewed again at later meetings.Councilors held their regular meeting on Tuesday, May 5, at 5:30 p.m. at council chambers, 949 East Second Ave., where they:Proclaimed the month of May as ALS awareness month. Heard an update from students with the Mayor's Youth Advisory Council. Updates included a suggestion to the council that the city hold a "lights out" day once a month, during which the city would turn off any non-essential lights. The advisory council also expressed interest in a mural project that would honor immigrants in the community.  Voted to adopt the Durango Impact and Resiliency Grant funding award recommendations, allocating $81,400 across seven projects. The $81,400 includes $32,800 from the Sustainability Programs budget and $48,600 from the Lodgers’ Tax Sustainable Tourism Marketing budget. Projects include scaling up commercial food waste diversion through Table to Farm Compost, affordable workforce housing support through Homesfund, and funding an outdoor kitchen for culturally relevant programs at Fort Lewis College.Introduced an ordinance that would authorize the conveyance of city-owned property at 1055 Avenida del Sol to Volunteers of America for the continued use as a community homeless shelter. The city has leased the 0.6-acre property to VOA for an annual fee of $1 to support families and individuals experiencing homelessness for more than 30 years. The volunteer organization pays for all operating and capital expenses associated with the site. The current facility requires significant renovations to maintain safety, functionality, and service capacity. The volunteer organization has requested ownership of the property to enable long-term investment, stabilize operations, and pursue additional funding opportunities that require site ownership.Voted to approve a resolution directing the city manager to provide publicly releasable information on the use of Flock cameras.Voted to approve an ordinance that would amend the Durango Code of Ordinances to increase the amount of available parking spaces in the City of Durango by prohibiting the parking or storage of all recreational vehicles, trailers, and crafts from parking along the public right-of-way for more than 72 hours in 7 days.WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU!Do you have a comment, question, or suggestion?
