High Surf Warning for South Walton, Coastal Bay: Stay Out of Water

A High Surf Warning and High Rip Current Risk are in effect for South Walton and Coastal Bay through Sunday, with dangerously large waves and rip currents expected; residents must stay out of the water.

Residents and visitors in South Walton and Coastal Bay areas are advised to stay out of the water due to a High Surf Warning and High Rip Current Risk issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL. The warning is effective from Friday, October 9, at 10 AM CDT until Sunday, October 11, at 10 AM CDT.

Dangerous rip currents are expected throughout late Sunday night. Additionally, dangerously large breaking waves of 8 to 12 feet are anticipated in the surf zone from Friday morning through Sunday morning. These conditions pose a significant threat to anyone entering the water.

The NWS warns that breaking waves can sweep individuals off jetties and docks, leading to dangerous situations. Life-threatening swimming conditions and significant beach erosion are also expected. Rip currents can pull even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters.

Everyone is urged to remain out of the water due to these life-threatening surf conditions. It is also critical to stay off of jetties, piers, and other waterside infrastructure. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises to relax and float, not to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
