Dangerous Rip Currents Expected for Gulf Coast Beaches Through Tonight
Dangerous rip currents are expected for beaches in South Walton, Coastal Bay, Coastal Gulf, and Coastal Franklin counties through late tonight, October 7, 2026. Swim near a lifeguard and know how to escape a rip current.
Beachgoers in South Walton, Coastal Bay, Coastal Gulf, and Coastal Franklin counties are advised of dangerous rip currents expected to persist through late tonight, October 7, 2026, until 4:00 AM EDT. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Tallahassee, FL, has issued a Rip Current Statement effective since 3:16 AM EDT on October 6.
These dangerous rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water, posing a significant risk to anyone entering the surf. The NWS specifically highlights beaches in Walton, Bay, Gulf, and Franklin Counties as being affected.
For your safety, if you plan to enter the water, swim near a lifeguard. If you find yourself caught in a rip current, the NWS advises you to relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If you are able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If you cannot escape the current, face the shore and call or wave for help.
