Extreme Storm Surge Warning for South Walton: Seek Immediate Shelter
An extreme Storm Surge Warning is in effect for South Walton, including Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport, with life-threatening storm surge, hurricane-force winds, major flooding, and tornado threats expected. Residents must seek immediate shelter and follow all evacuation orders.
A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for South Walton, including Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport, effective immediately from the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee FL. This alert was issued today, October 9, at 5:17 AM EDT, and expires at 1:30 PM UTC on October 9, 2026. Residents are urged to complete all remaining efforts to protect life and property now and move to safe shelter before hazardous conditions worsen.
Life-threatening storm surge of 4-7 feet above ground is possible through Saturday morning. All ordered evacuations should be complete, and evacuees should be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. If you are sheltering, remain in a safe location and do not venture outside. Move to upper floors if necessary to escape rising water.
Wind speeds of 45-60 mph with gusts up to 85 mph are forecast from early this afternoon until early Saturday morning, with potential for winds of 74 to 110 mph. This could cause considerable wind damage, including major damage to homes and extensive power outages lasting for weeks. Furthermore, a Flood Watch is in effect, with an additional 3-6 inches of rain expected, potentially leading to major flooding. The NWS also indicates conditions are favorable for several tornadoes, some possibly intense. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter immediately.
