A Storm Surge Warning has been issued for South Walton, including Santa Rosa Beach, Sandestin, and Freeport, by the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee. This is an extreme, immediate threat. Residents in surge-prone areas should prepare for life-threatening storm surge flooding of greater than 6 feet above ground. If evacuation orders are given for your area, leave immediately to avoid being cut off from emergency services.

Tropical Storm force winds (35-45 mph with gusts to 70 mph) are expected from Friday afternoon until early Saturday morning. Significant wind damage is possible; secure loose objects and move to safe shelter as soon as possible. Potential impacts include damage to roofing and siding, snapped trees, impassable roads, and scattered power outages.

Life-threatening storm surge is possible with inundation of 4-7 feet above ground, with extensive impacts including structural damage to buildings and major damage to marinas. The window of concern for storm surge is Friday morning until Saturday morning. Evacuation efforts should be completed before driving conditions become unsafe.

A Flood Watch is in effect, with 3-6 inches of rain expected, leading to potential major flooding. Emergency plans should include the possibility of evacuations and rescues. Additionally, the situation is favorable for several tornadoes, some possibly intense. Listen for tornado watches and warnings; if issued, shelter quickly. Those in manufactured homes or on boats should relocate to safe shelter before hazardous weather arrives.

This warning is effective October 8 at 8:01 AM EDT and expires October 8 at 4:15 PM EDT. For more information, visit NWS Tallahassee at weather.gov/tallahassee, Florida Disaster at floridadisaster.org, or Walton County Emergency Management at co.walton.fl.us/1063/Emergency-Management.
