Rip Current Risk High in Charleston, Coastal Flood Advisory in Effect
Charleston County faces a High Rip Current Risk until 8 PM EDT and a Coastal Flood Advisory until 11 AM EDT today, with dangerous rip currents and potential road inundation expected. Take precautions and avoid driving through floodwaters.
Charleston residents and visitors are advised of a High Rip Current Risk and a Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC. The Rip Current Statement is effective immediately, October 11 at 7:18 AM EDT, and will remain in effect until 8:00 PM EDT this evening. The Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 11:00 AM EDT this morning.
Dangerous rip currents are expected throughout Charleston County, posing a significant risk to swimmers. If caught in a rip current, the NWS advises relaxing and floating. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Swim near a lifeguard if possible.
For the Coastal Flood Advisory, up to one half foot of inundation above ground level is possible along shorelines and tidal waterways. This could lead to some roads becoming impassable, particularly 1 to 2 hours before and after high tide, which will occur around 9:15 AM this morning in Charleston. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Property owners in flood-prone areas should take necessary protective actions. For additional water level and flood impact information, visit water.weather.gov.
