A Rip Current Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory have been issued for Charleston County today, October 11, warning of dangerous rip currents and potential flooding that could make some roads impassable.

Charleston residents should prepare for dangerous rip currents and potential coastal flooding today, October 11, according to a Rip Current Statement and Coastal Flood Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Charleston SC.

A High Rip Current Risk is in effect for Charleston County through this evening. Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore that can pull even strong swimmers into deeper water. If caught in a rip current, relax and float. Do not swim against the current. If able, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help. Always swim near a lifeguard.

Additionally, a Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect for Charleston County from 7 AM to 11 AM EDT this morning. Up to one half foot of inundation above ground level is expected along shorelines and tidal waterways. This could lead to some roads becoming impassable. High tide will occur around 9:15 AM this morning at Charleston, with saltwater inundation possible one to two hours before and after high tide. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Take necessary actions to protect flood-prone property.
