Coastal Brunswick County residents and visitors are advised to take immediate precautions due to a Rip Current Statement, Coastal Flood Advisory, and High Surf Advisory issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) in Wilmington, NC.

A Coastal Flood Advisory is in effect until 11 PM EDT this evening, October 10. This may result in up to one foot of inundation above ground level in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. If travel is required, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Residents in flood-prone areas should take necessary actions to protect their property.

A High Rip Current Risk is expected from 6 AM EDT Sunday, October 11, through Sunday evening, October 11. Dangerous rip currents are anticipated. Inexperienced swimmers should remain out of the water due to dangerous surf conditions. If you choose to swim, do so near a lifeguard. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, do not swim against the current. If able, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.

Additionally, a High Surf Advisory will be in effect from 11 AM to 11 PM EDT Sunday, October 11, with large breaking waves of 3 to 6 feet expected in the surf zone. These conditions present dangerous swimming and surfing conditions and localized beach erosion.

These advisories specifically impact Coastal Brunswick County. Low-lying roads and locations along the Intracoastal Waterway and adjacent tidal creeks may experience minor coastal flooding. Check with local officials for any road closures or impacts.
