Coastal Brunswick County residents and visitors are advised of a Rip Current Statement, Coastal Flood Advisory, and High Surf Advisory in effect today, October 11, issued by the National Weather Service Wilmington NC. Dangerous rip currents, coastal flooding, and large breaking waves are expected.

The High Rip Current Risk is in effect from 6 AM EDT this morning through this evening. A Coastal Flood Advisory is active from 7 AM to 10 AM EDT this morning, with up to one half foot of inundation expected in low-lying areas near shorelines and tidal waterways. The High Surf Advisory is in effect from 11 AM this morning to 11 PM EDT this evening, anticipating large breaking waves of up to 1 foot in the surf zone.

Impacts include minor coastal flooding on low-lying roads and areas along the Intracoastal Waterway. Dangerous swimming and surfing conditions are expected, along with localized beach erosion. Rip currents can quickly sweep swimmers away from shore.

If travel is required during the Coastal Flood Advisory, allow extra time as some roads may be closed. Do not drive around barricades or through water of unknown depth. Protect flood-prone property. Inexperienced swimmers should stay out of the water due to dangerous surf. If caught in a rip current, relax and float, do not swim against the current. Swim parallel to the shoreline if possible, or face the shore and call for help.
