Residents in Southeast Louisiana and South Mississippi must finalize hurricane preparations immediately as Hurricane Isaias strengthens in the Gulf. The National Weather Service in New Orleans has issued a Tropical Cyclone Local Statement today, October 8, at 10:14 AM CDT, detailing significant threats of wind, storm surge, and heavy rainfall.
A Hurricane Warning and Storm Surge Warning are in effect for Southern Jackson. A Tropical Storm Warning and Hurricane Watch are active for Northern Jackson. Storm Surge and Tropical Storm Warnings are in place for Eastern Orleans, Lower Plaquemines, Lower St. Bernard, Southeast St. Tammany, Southern Hancock, and Southern Harrison. Tropical Storm Warnings are also issued for Northern Hancock and Northern Harrison.
Isaias, currently 430 miles south of New Orleans with 85 mph winds, is moving east-northeast at 10 mph. Impacts are most likely from Friday afternoon into Saturday morning. Life-threatening wind and surge are expected, especially east of Ocean Springs in coastal Mississippi, with potential extensive property damage and widespread power outages. West of Ocean Springs and in extreme coastal Southeast Louisiana, dangerous wind and locally hazardous surge are anticipated.
Evacuation orders must be followed. Ensure cell phones are charged and have multiple ways to receive warnings. Do not rely on 911 during unsafe conditions. Visitors should know their specific location and county. Monitor weather.gov and local news for updates. The next local statement is expected around 5 PM EDT.
