A Tropical Storm Warning is active for Lower Plaquemines, including Port Sulphur, Empire, and Venice, with hazardous winds and life-threatening storm surge expected; residents should shelter immediately.

A Tropical Storm Warning has been issued for Lower Plaquemines, effective immediately as of October 9 at 4:00 PM CDT, by the National Weather Service (NWS) New Orleans. This warning impacts Port Sulphur, Empire, and Venice. Residents are urged to move to safe shelter before hazardous winds begin.

Forecasters anticipate peak winds of 25-35 mph with gusts up to 55 mph, with potential for sustained winds of 39 to 57 mph. Damage to porches, awnings, carports, sheds, and unanchored mobile homes is possible. Expect many large tree limbs to break, some trees to snap or uproot, and scattered power and communications outages. Hazardous driving conditions are expected on bridges and elevated roadways.

Life-threatening storm surge is also possible, with potential for 3-5 feet above ground in surge-prone areas through Saturday morning. Flood preparations and ordered evacuations should be complete. Evacuees must be in shelters well away from storm surge flooding. Remain sheltered in a safe location and do not venture outside. No significant additional rainfall or tornado threat is forecast at this time.

This warning is in effect until October 10 at 12:00 AM UTC. For more information, visit gohsep.la.gov/emergency.
