Dangerous Rip Currents Expected Along Local Beaches Through Tonight
A Rip Current Statement is in effect for Matagorda and Brazoria Islands, warning of dangerous rip currents through tonight, October 9th. Swimmers should exercise extreme caution and follow safety guidelines.
A Rip Current Statement has been issued for Gulf-facing beaches, including the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula, effective immediately until 1:00 AM CDT on October 10th. The National Weather Service in Houston/Galveston TX warns of dangerous rip currents.
Rip currents pose a significant risk, capable of sweeping even strong swimmers away from shore into deeper waters. Residents and visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution when near the water during this period.
If you plan to enter the water, the National Weather Service advises swimming near a lifeguard and avoiding areas near rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, the primary instruction is to relax and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim in a direction following the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore and call or wave for help.
This Rip Current Statement was issued on October 9th at 3:18 AM CDT and remains in effect through late tonight, October 9th.
