Coastal residents and visitors are advised to exercise extreme caution due to a Rip Current Statement issued by the National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston TX. Dangerous rip currents are expected along Gulf-facing beaches, including the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula.

This Moderate Severity alert is effective immediately, beginning October 4 at 3:39 PM CDT, and will remain in effect until Monday, October 5 at 1:00 PM CDT. Rip currents can sweep even the most experienced swimmers away from shore into deeper water.

The NWS advises individuals to swim near a lifeguard and to avoid swimming near rocks, jetties, and piers. If caught in a rip current, remain calm, relax, and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline. If unable to escape, face the shore, call for help, or wave your arms to signal for assistance.
