Beachgoers are advised to exercise extreme caution today, October 1, as a Rip Current Statement has been issued for Gulf-facing beaches in our area. The National Weather Service (NWS) Houston/Galveston TX has issued this statement, effective from 5:45 AM CDT until 8:00 PM CDT today, October 1.

Dangerous rip currents are expected along the Matagorda Peninsula, Brazoria County beaches, Galveston Island, and the Bolivar Peninsula. These currents can rapidly pull even experienced swimmers away from the shore into deeper water.

To ensure your safety, the NWS strongly advises swimming only near a lifeguard and avoiding areas near rocks, jetties, and piers. If you find yourself caught in a rip current, remain calm and float. Do not attempt to swim against the current. If possible, swim parallel to the shoreline to escape the current. If you are unable to escape, face the shore and signal for help by calling out or waving your arms.
